When expressing the feelings of others, we cannot use the same form of adjectives that we would use to describe our own feeling. In this situations the adjective must be modified with がる.
For example when expressing that one's leg is painful, we can use the sentence 足が痛い, however when talking about others the adjective needs to be modifed, i.e. 母の足を痛がっている.
An important thing to note is also the change of particle used before the adjective: while talking about oneself が is used, but changes to を when talking about others.
When talking about a currently ongoing situation, the continuous form of 〜がる (conjugated to 〜がっている) is commonly used.
